BPS has been recognized as one of the top urban school districts in the United Students and was recently awarded the Broad Prize for Urban Education as the most improved urban school district in the nation.The Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Learning must be a visionary educational reform leader as well as an organized, dynamic person who can oversee and effectively implement new and effective ways for students to learn and for teachers to teach. The Director will provide ongoing reviews of standards-based units and lesson plans and, using student data, evaluates their efficacy. The role will assign and manage instructional staff to capitalize on teacher strengths and evaluates staff as directed by the Headmaster. The Director will address the professional development needs of individuals and staff in consultation with the ILT. The role will help establish and coordinate Small Learning Communities (SLCs) and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)Reports to: Head of SchoolResponsibilities:

• Collaborate with and support Assistant Principals and Directors in strengthening their instructional leadership practices, including providing coaching, feedback, and thought partnership aligned to the school’s instructional vision and goals with a specific focus on strengthening their evaluation and progress monitoring of school staff

• Conduct evaluations of teachers and support staff as directed by the Head of School and in accordance with the teacher agreement, documenting the effectiveness of performance in classes and labs and offering follow-up steps to maintain a high quality of instruction.

• Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive professional development plan for teachers and staff, including ILT, PD, and CPTs in collaboration with APs.

• Work closely with district leaders to support student achievement and the professional growth of instructional staff.

• Oversee the development and implementation of academic curriculum consistent with the Massachusetts Frameworks, and district approved HQIM.

• Co-lead the integration between technical and academic subjects with the Vocational Coordinator.

• Build and evaluate instructional strategies in faculty and staff that support the engagement of students and their academic achievement.

• Lead the implementation of current and new pedagogies aligned with the school’s instructional vision.

• Use a variety of data and indicators to strategically evaluate programs, initiating new courses, modifying existing courses, and discontinuing courses and services as needed.

• Assist in the collection and analysis of necessary reporting data for teachers, teams, the school, the district, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and other entities.

• Establish appropriate classroom standards, train staff and students on these standards, and monitor the application of these standards in academic classrooms and labs.

• Monitor and analyze the performance and progress of students in all academic courses.

• Supervise the coaching and evaluation process of all staff including conducting learning walks, classroom observations and giving feedback for improved instructional methodologies for all learners, including students with disabilities.

• Encourage students to undertake rigorous and challenging academic work.

• Foster a positive, supportive learning environment, including respect for people, facilities, and equipment.

• Help define the strategic, long-term direction of the school as a member of the School Improvement Team.

• Develop professional skills through participation in trainings, conferences, observations, and other forms of professional improvement.

• Work collaboratively with school administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure consistent implementation of the school-based rules and the Code of Conduct.

• Assume any additional responsibilities specifically designated by the Headmaster.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum five (5) years academic teaching experience

• Teaching or administrative experience in an urban high school setting

• Master’s Degree

• Massachusetts Professional License in academic content area

• Possess the necessary license or credentials as required for certification as Supervisor/Director

• Understanding of effective educational practices across disciplines, including familiarity with vocational frameworks and vocational models

• Knowledge of and experience in cultural proficiency and cultural competency educational practices in support of ethnically diverse learning communities.

• Experience establishing and maintaining a multi-cultural learning community

• Demonstrated leadership experience

• Ability to work effectively with business and industry leaders, other community partners, administrators, teachers, parents, and students

• Computer/technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office products and data collection and analysis software

• Interest in working in fast-paced environment and ability to manage multiple responsibilities with humor and enthusiasm
