Job Summary and Key Responsibilities
The 0 FTE Elementary School Counselor will be responsible for leading counseling groups, teaching social-emotional learning groups, and assisting in the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) process for behavior. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in counseling, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, and parents. Key responsibilities will include:
- Providing individual and group counseling services to students, focusing on social-emotional learning, academic support, and personal growth
- Developing and implementing guidance programs to promote student success, including career exploration, academic planning, and social skills development
- Collaborating with teachers and staff to identify and support students with diverse needs, including those with special needs, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Assisting students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities, interpreting individual standardized test scores, and developing education and occupation plans
- Registering new students, providing orientation, and helping students to resolve educational handicaps, prevent drop-outs, and discover and develop special abilities
- Maintaining accurate and confidential student records, including attendance, cumulative progress, activity records, and uniform transcript records
- Conferencing with parents and teachers to discuss student progress, provide support, and develop strategies to promote student success
- Assisting in the orientation of new faculty, providing in-service training to teachers on guidance and counseling issues, and advising administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline
Essential Qualifications and Skills
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess the following essential qualifications and skills:
- Alaska Certificate Type C with an endorsement in Counseling
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a school counselor, preferably in an elementary school setting
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and counseling skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, parents, and community members
- Strong knowledge of social-emotional learning, academic support, and personal growth strategies
- Familiarity with MTSS and other evidence-based counseling models
- Ability to maintain accurate and confidential student records
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
While not required, the following preferred qualifications and skills are highly desirable:
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including students with special needs, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and crisis intervention strategies
- Experience with counseling software and technology, including online counseling platforms and student information systems
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and community members
- Ability to speak multiple languages, with a focus on languages spoken by our student population
